Several of TIME magazine's recently named "The 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America" (Feb 7 issue) are joined in a growing global coalition of Christian leaders calling for a Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem each year on the first Sunday of October, the website www.daytopray.com announced.

Ted Haggard, Senior Pastor of the 15,000 member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, and President of the powerful National Association of Evangelicals, released this statement: "Jerusalem is at the heart of what is happening in the world politically and spiritually. As Christians have been doing for years, we must pray that God would bless Jerusalem and bring its people peace and freedom."

The annual prayer movement, which began in New York City in early 2002, is spearheaded by Dr. Jack Hayford, General Overseer of the Foursquare Churches, and Rev. Robert Stearns, leader of Eagles' Wings Ministries. Last year, the effort mobilized 53,000 churches in 72 nations, including a Jerusalem ceremony with Pat Robertson in front of the Knesset in Israel which was attended by over 4000 Christians from 70 nations, and received international press coverage.

"In this movement of prayer for Jerusalem there exists the largest known coalition of the foremost Evangelical [, Charismatic, Pentecostal, and many cross-denominational] Christian leaders of influence in the world - all in agreement that now is the time to pray for the Peace of Jerusalem. We are grateful for this level of commitment from these respected men and women of faith," said co-chairman Stearns.

Adding his voice to the effort is preaching phenomenon, T.D. Jakes. Bishop Jakes, who has gone on video encouraging his followers to join the Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem effort, said, "I am so excited about this history-making opportunity on the first Sunday of October . . . believers from around the world – particularly 500 Christian leaders – are manning the battle stations as we go before God in prayer."

TIME called Joyce Meyer the "Feminine Side of Evangelism," but when it comes to calling Christians to pray for Jerusalem October 2, Joyce Meyer talks tough, "As Christians and believers in the Word of God, we have a responsibility to pray for the peace of Jerusalem."

These leaders and others, including Stephen Strang, leading Christian publisher of Charisma Magazine, who is also included in the TIME "Top 25" are speaking out, using their powerful influence to call millions of Christians to unite in prayer on the first Sunday of October for this Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.

Speaking of the power of these leaders and millions of Christians to make a difference in this prayer effort, co-chairman Hayford summed it up, "Every one of us has a voice, and our voice needs to be lifted."
